Tiger of Sweden Toronto

It was the 10 year anniversary this summer for Tiger of Sweden Toronto on Ossington Ave and they know how to party. Local businesses in this bustlng area provided tasty beverages and party foods. A photo booth was popular, but performances later by Justin Nozuka were totally remarkable – so special with a dedicated stage created inside the store with Tiger of Sweden Toronto clothing as the background. Very stylish indeed !

Rock The Barn

Founded by teen brothers Callum and Thomas Buckley, “Rock The Barn” at Fresh City Farms Downsview Park June 22nd was a country hoe-down with a purpose. After losing a classmate who took his own life, the brothers were inspired to do something to support other young people facing mental health challenges. They enlisted the help of Dr. Tripathy from CAMH Foundation to present the first-ever RTBT concert featuring 3 Canadian musical acts, craft beer and delicious food donated by Ghost Tacos.

This fundraising event was a massive project involving local businesses, numerous volunteers and of course Callum Buckley who not only was the emcee, he is a song writer and solid performer who knows how to put on a show, on stage or off. If you missed this inaugural event, make sure to check out www.rockthebarntoronto.com for updates on the concert next year. Thanks to Callum and Timothy Buckley for our invitation.

Food insecurity is a serious reality for many in the Regent Park area, not having or knowing when the next meal will be. Preview opening night of A State of Mind

On the evening of April 6th, media and selected guests were invited to a preview opening night of A State of Mind – The Illusion of Choice at Casa Loma. Not too long ago President & CEO of Liberty Entertainment, Nick Di Donato was at Los Angeles’ Magic Castle where he met Jeff Kaylor. Together they discussed the possibility of staging something special here in Toronto because Liberty Entertainment has for years partnered with the city of Toronto to bring people of all ages to our legendary castle on the hill. Pure magic, right ! And it is. I really enjoyed the history and attention to detail that went into turning the 800 foot tunnel below Austin Terrace into a history lesson of sorts, really the opening act as to what would lay ahead. Pictures and video clips feature some of the famous and greatest conjurers of illusion of all time. I could not get enough of this fascinating walk back into time.

Next up is the Celebrity Walk which is like a wax museum with famous actors in movie sets that were actually filmed at Casa Loma. A brilliant touch once again – another illusion. There are actually two shows to enjoy. Without giving away too much, world famous Jeff Kaylor has a way with cards and coins for an intimate up-close show in the specially designed Stables theatre. Sit up front and you will be in his show for sure. Music meets the magic on intermission, again in the Stables space. Next up, although each evening can be reversed is Lawrence Larouche, a 40 career mentalist who quickly knows what you think of him. Lots of laughs and “I can’t believe that” moments with Miraculum – Sleight of Mind at the larger Carriage Room Theatre. Audience members actually become part of this cast by curtain call as you will soon see. I applaud Liberty Entertainment for other themed experiences back to the annual Legends of Horror and the very recent Twilight Symphonies celebrating the Casa Loma early days with big band music. Our thanks to Susan Willemsen of the Siren Group Inc. for our invitation.

Women In Insurance Cancer Crusade, WICC, 25th Anniversary Gala

A Star Is Born was the title for the Women In Insurance Cancer Crusade, WICC, 25th Anniversary Gala held April 5th at the beautiful Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Since the inception of WICC in 1996, the Canadian property and casualty insurance industry has raised over $19.2 million across the country for cancer research. All proceeds from this evening with a grant proposal process went to the Canadian Cancer Society. A highlight was in fact the presentation of a cheque for $125,000 making this a real celebration of helping others.

The Ballroom was filled with glitz, glamour and many well dressed patrons who got have their own “A Star is Born” moment walking the red carpet on arrival to the reception which was themed after the Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper movie right from the ARS Star Lounge to a Champagne Bar, an awesome ice bar and a dinner menu to complete the experience. Individuals were recognized later with the Lew Dunn Memorial, Gold Flame, and Hall of Fame Awards just prior to the ultimate party dance band United Nations featuring lead vocalists, Colin and Amelia who were also joined by costumed dancers to kick the stage show off ! Committee members and volunteers were all stars themselves in presenting such an exciting fundraiser. A big thanks to Karen Forsey and Laurel DiMaso in particular for overseeing the gala.

The Rogers Conn Smythe

The 72nd anniversary of the Rogers Conn Smythe Sports Celebrity Dinner and Auction was held March 29th, a very fitting date in that March is Easter Seals Month. Attracting 800 plus guests to the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, this was the largest turn out yet. During the dinner that was hosted by Sid Seixeiro of Breakfast Television, we heard many motivational stories from this organization that itself celebrated a 100 year anniversary in 2022.

[ux_gallery ids=”4531,4532,4533,4534,4535,4536,4537,4538,4539,4540,4541,4542,4543,4544,4545,4546,4547,4548,4549,4550,4551″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small” columns__sm=”2″]

The head table guests were well known sports celebrities who have supported Easter Seals families for many years. In particular, three-time Olympic Gold Medalist, Marnie McBean who was the recipient of the Conn Symthe Lifetime Achievement Award. Later another important highlight was the introduction of the two young 2023 Easter Seals Ambassadors, Niki Tokhi and Ryerson Beardmore.

CNIB Finer Things

CNIB Finer Things held March 26th at Artscape Wychwood Barns, was the name of the annual fundraiser this time, with a wine tasting theme. CNIB ambassador Ben Mulroney welcomed guests back after 3 long years without an in-person event for this organization that celebrated their centenary year, again at Wychwood Barns several years ago.

[ux_gallery ids=”4597,4598,4599,4600,4601,4602,4603,4604,4605,4606,4607,4608,4609,4610,4611,4612,4613,4614″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small” columns__sm=”2″]

Special guest speakers reminded us that some 25,000 charities were lost during the pandemic, not to return. The need is still strong to increase the public understanding of blindness with a new program called “The Way Forward”.

[ux_gallery ids=”4615,4616,4617,4618,4619,4620,4621,4622,4623,4624,4625,4626,4627,4628″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small” columns__sm=”2″]

This is a 5 year plan to remove barriers wherever and whenever possible, make door to door journeys easier and to recognize that children with sight loss are the future leaders for CNIB. This was an exciting event in an historic venue. A highlight was a virtual performance by Canadian opera singer Measha Brueggergosman-Lee. Even the wine tasting aspect was unique by offering masks, creating dim vision to highten the senses of taste and smell. Not everyone joined in, but it was a creative message just the same. Our thanks to Karin McCarthur for the invitation to cover this event.

The Great Valentine Gala

February the 11th, the Canadian Foundation for Physically Disabled Persons, CFPDP, celebrated its 39th annual Great Valentine Gala in support of all Canadians who live with disability. In fact, over almost 4 decades, this annual fundraiser has generated more than $35 million dollars funding many necessary programs.

Throughout the evening, long-time emcee Suhana Meharchand helped salute several corporations and individuals who truly lead by example. In particular, remembering the Hon. David C. Onley who passed just weeks before the gala. It is quite amazing that on the evening of February 11, 1985 this was to be a one time event, but thanks to Founder, the Hon. Vim Kochhar, goals were set high to build affordable and specially designed housing for people deaf, blind or with a disability. Today there are over 50 members on a wait list for a new home nearing completion in Etobicoke.

The Canadian International Auto Show VIP Night Gala

The Canadian International Auto Show, CIAS, held a VIP Opening Night Gala February 16th to preview the latest vehicles and related services and in turn mark a 50 year anniversary after obviously missing the past 2 years. Guests were dressed to impress and why not. This is the largest auto show of its kind and a lot has changed in only a few years.

[ux_gallery ids=”4123,4124,4125,4126,4127,4128,4129,4130,4131,4132″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small” columns__sm=”2″]

Mostly the increased public interest in electric and hybrid vehicles. The theme for 2023 was Mobility Reimagined. Yes as always there are the luxury and super expensive sports cars, but with an aging population the show presented accessible transportation solutions with assisted mobility vehicles and vans. Another interesting display came from Roshel, the manufacturer of armoured vehicles, as the 200 that Canada dispatched to Ukraine. I have saved some of the best news for last. It was decades ago when The Guess Who performed at the auto show.

[ux_gallery ids=”4134,4135,4136,4137,4138,4139,4140,4141,4142,4143″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small” columns__sm=”2″]

Well, this night really shifted into high gear when Burton Cummings and his backing band took to the stage for a solid non-stop performance of all the hits, first when he fronted the Guess Who, and later as a top selling solo artist. This night really set the stage presenting all things automotive under one roof.

PDAC 2023 Convention

The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada, PDAC, drew over 23,000 attendees to share ideas and network opportunities in the mineral exploration and mining industry. The Fairmont Royal York was fully booked and very close to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre where daily presentations where given by guest speakers.

The mission has always been to promote sustainable best practices and minimal impact on the environment. That was the business of the day. Most evenings there were private parties to finish off the day. Many at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel as the opening and closing awards parties.

Others at places like Steam Whistle, the huge Real Sports Bar and one of the most interesting at Ripley’s Aquarium. Representing over 6,500 members, this convention brings many dollars to our city and puts Toronto on the map as a destination for other large events like this. More at pdac.ca

SickKids Fired-Up Gala

[ux_video url=”https://youtu.be/S8cr4oEjgm8″]

The first-ever Fired-Up Gala in support of SickKids Hospital was held February 24th at the Ritz-Carlton Toronto. Roxy Zapala was been planning events for others over the past two decades as owner and creative director of Art of Celebrations Event Planning and Design. This evening was personal. The family is so grateful to SickKids Hospital due to a milk warmer accident that sent her then 21-month son, Levi, to the specialized Burn and Plastics Unit to treat third degree burns to his face and body.

Sadly, there are many similar accidents so the gala was to help raise funds and awareness about burn prevention, also how blessed we are to have these doctors and such a world class hospital. Well Roxy sure knows how to party once the formalities are over with entertainment by Cirque-It-Work-It, then drummers Bongo & B, also Che La Soul and the amazing DJ Jay.

The Giving Hearts 10th Anniversary Gala

The Giving Hearts 10th Anniversary Gala was held February 18th at Hazelton Manor in Vaughan. Gala Founder Joe Azzopardi reminded guests in his opening remarks by saying “our mandate since 2011 has remained to provide funding to two critical areas of cancer treatment: the PYNK Program and Prostate Cancer research at Sunnybrook Hospital”. Returning Emcee, award winning journalist/broadcaster, Elvira Caria had the energy to match this exciting evening of success stories and accomplishments. We all know someone that has been touched by cancer. Corporate lawyer Anne Madden underwent successful treatment at Sunnybrook Hospital at a young age.

[ux_gallery ids=”4182,4183,4184,4185,4186,4187,4188,4189,4190,4191,4192,4193,4194,4195,4196,4197,4198,4199″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small” columns__sm=”2″]

After that positive experience in 2020 with Sunnybrook’s PYNK Program for young women with breast cancer, she began fundraising for the program through Black Lab Brewing which she co-founded. Her story and that experience has inspired many others to support PYNK. Hazelton Manor is known for their exceptional cuisine and service starting this night with antipasto food stations, a popular oyster bar and could you believe then a sit-down dinner with dessert. Don’t worry, live entertainment from JC Musica, Blu Soul and DJ Anthony had that handled with lots of dancing exercise till the late hours.

Congratulations must be given to the Giving Hearts Gala Committee, those many volunteers and also thanks to generous donations raised by returning corporate donors.

Love Wines From Chile

Love Wines From Chile” was the theme February 14th, as many people celebrated Valentine’s Day at Gotstyle in the historic Distillery. The upscale clothing store never looked more romantic thanks to a flower cart and the glittering gold entrance way.

[ux_gallery ids=”3994,3995,3996,3997,3998,3999,4000,4001,4002,4003,4004,4005,4006″ style=”default” type=”masonry” grid_height__sm=”600px” col_spacing=”small”]

Guests were greeted by costumed performers who later would put on a show. But first, this date night for many was to sample 17 different wines offered by five wineries that carry the “Certified Sustainable logo” which denotes care in winemaking from these wines exported from the western edge of South America. Chilean food pairings were also well received to make this a very sociable experience.

The POGO Pajama Party at the Symes

A 40 year anniversary was marked February 9th at the Symes with the POGO Pajama Party. Years ago this annual fundraiser was more of the expected black-tie event with a sit-down dinner as so many other galas once were. As returning emcee, television journalist Glen Baxter now reminds us there is a strict dress code; relax and celebrate POGO in creative night wear – yes colourful pj’s.

[ux_gallery ids=”4469,4470,4471,4472,4473,4474,4475,4476,4477,4482″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small” columns__sm=”2″]

That theme for the past many years has attracted a younger demographic of philanthropic supporters which is essential these days. The venues are also the latest treated as a destination. The Symes, built 1939 was once a garbage incinerator waste transfer station. Today this repurposed gorgeous art deco space is home to high-end wedding celebrations, perfect for a party like this. POGO is the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, offering care, treatment and support to the children and family’s dealing with cancer. Understanding the needs and stress a family goes through when a child develops cancer, 25 years ago POGO began building satellite clinics to elleviate long distance travel and related costs.

Yes this was a double anniversary so how did the party go ? Well with a welcoming stilt-walker, dress up photo booth and the rocking band, it was fabulous ! Although some areas were reserved by supporting sponsors, a few were donated to POGO Ambassadors and their families. Rebecca McKenzie is the 2023 Chair for the POGO PJ Party. She bravely shared a personal story about her son Jacob. That story continued shortly after as Jacob took to the stage explaining his journey and showing his talent as a performer opening for SOLE POWER LIVE. It really does not get much better than this; care with humanity. Twilight Symphony At The Castle

A tradition that goes back 100 years has returned with the Casa Loma Twilight Symphony At The Castle. You see when Casa Loma was an upscale hotel, big-band music was the rage going into Prohibition. Few could compare with the Orange Blossoms, later renamed the Casa Loma Orchestra which toured extensively into the 1940’s.

[ux_gallery ids=”4084,4085,4086,4087,4088,4089,4090″ style=”default” type=”masonry” col_spacing=”small”]

Thanks to the late Maestro Kerry Stratton in 2014 and today, under the direction of Maestro Paolo Busato, that experience returned. A lot of care went into these series of themed concert evenings starting with an 800 foot walk in the tunnel under Austin Terrace.

Some wonderful big band images are presented along with the movies they were featured in, as you finally reach the Carriage Room and stable areas. There were no shortage of candles in creating this romantic destination.

The theme when I attended was “Night at the Movies” taking us through some of the best know movie music of the decades from James Bond, to themes from Mission Impossible, Titanic, Chicago and much more. I really enjoyed how Catriona Delaney set up what was to come next with some fascinating history of the music to come. Of course Maestro Paolo Busato was a marvel to watch directing these mostly young musicians. Our thanks to Liberty Group and Susan Willemsen of the Siren Group for this invitation to attend.

The 34th Annual Dragon Ball returned stronger than ever, in fact it was sold-out weeks in advance after finally returning to an in-person event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Upwards of 1200 guest patrons and dignitaries were welcomed with a reception that was bounty-full and presented by young Chinese-Canadian chefs under a theme of “from memories to creativity”.

All would agree that Nicole Servinis and Winston Sih were a perfect choice to emcee this event and introduce acts like the featured magic show by Louise Chan and many others. In theme with the Year of the Rabbit and a Dragons resilience, all necessary proceeds will go towards Yee Hong’s services and programs for some 8000 seniors now on a 10 year wait list. There are now 4 community centres, but the goal of the building fund is to create 3 more.

Mayor’s Lunar New Year Reception

There were many large events across the city of Toronto to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year and mayor John Tory attended most. His last was actually his own January 31st as the public and counsellors were invited for a reception in the Members Lounge of City Hall. Guests were treated to a bounty-full buffet of tempting cuisine along with several Lion Dance performances. Mayor Tory was pleased with how our city made this Year of the Rabbit so special to so many.

Fete Chinoise returned to the Shangril-La Hotel Toronto

Fete Chinoise returned to the Shangril-La Hotel Toronto January 28th with their 8th annual signature event with the theme “Into the Unknown” to celebrate the human spirit in the face of unknowns, uncertainty and adversity, in other words, taking a leap of faith. The entire 3rd floor of the hotel never looked better, dressed in trees, foliage and floral displays. Guests experienced outstanding live music, food stations, fashion and performance arts, all capturing Chinese traditions and legacies. This all takes years of planning with many volunteers so the Fete Chinoise Team under the leadership of Deborah Lau-Yu must be congratulated on one of the finest galas of the year. Everyone dressed-to-impress, especially the ladies. The Year of the Rabbit was presented everywhere for some classy photo opportunities. The evening began with a bang, literally as a young band of percussionists accompanied a Lion Dance by the Wushu Project. DJ Michael Coombs knows how to please a young crowd, but the real action was on stage later from guest performers and finally concluding with the St. Royals who packed the dance floor with hits of the day. What a way to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year while supporting the Scarborough Health Network through donations and bids from the popular silent auction. Night of live competitive painting

Once again, this time January 24th, an amazing night of live competitive painting was held at the Great Hall on Queen Street West. You see Art Battle Canada is searching for the best painters across Canada in major cities. The Great Hall in Toronto is where this all started many years ago and the challenge is on. Art Battle or AB as those in the know would say, brings both new and experienced painters to the easels for a timed session where a live band keeps up the energy while an emcee counts down the final minutes allowed. Throughout the night, different sets of painters face-off to see who will be declared the winner for Toronto in this case. Then finalists will be invited to qualify to see who will win the 2023 Art Battle National Championship. With fans cheering from above and all around, this event is almost like a sporting event with music – not a bad idea at all. Especially when paintings are later up for auction at the end of the night. To follow along for updated results visit; artbattle.com

December 8th patrons of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival

December 8th patrons of the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, ICFF, were invited to a very special preview screening of “Lamborghini, The Man Behind The Legend “. This was not a regular evening because guests were encouraged to dress to the nines with gents in black tie and ladies in fine evening wear. The reason; a gala post-screening party was to be held close by at Ricarda’s. A live band welcomed guests to the lavish reception featuring a red carpet entrance and multiple food stations surrounding vintage Lamborghini vehicles just like in the new movie courtesy of Grand Touring Automobiles. Yes, this was a swanky affair, perfect to launch the release of this fascinating movie.

Opening night preview of rock and roll icons from the 1980’s that were featured in the latest book by Lynn Goldsmith. Along with the book signing

Brian Liss had a solid turnout November 12th at his gallery. for the opening night preview of rock and roll icons from the 1980’s that were featured in the latest book by Lynn Goldsmith. Along with the book signing, we heard a few stories of when and how some of these legendary acts were photographed. Decades ago there were far less handlers of talent and top-tier photographers like Lynn Goldsmith were able to capture candid moments without being controlled. The results are on the gallery walls and in the new book. Truly remarkable.

For decades CAMH has helped people of all ages living with mental illness find answers and hope. The recent pandemic made their services even more necessary due to the stress of loneliness we all went through like no other time we have shared. The Mayor’s Evening For The Arts covered by Jglaser

The Mayor’s Evening For The Arts returned November 14th to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre as the annual fundraising gala in support of the Toronto Arts Foundation. The event was hosted by actor Jake Epstein and of course offered plenty of live entertainment from jazz performances to ballet and theatrical performances throughout the evening. Mayor John Tory remarked that since Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, our arts culture is exemplary. Not only do the arts provide plentiful job opportunities, they have helped with our recovery as a society coming out of the pandemic, a lonely time for many. Highlights included the success of initiatives like Arts in the Parks, bringing high-quality free arts events to parks, the artist Resiliency funds, and finally the news that theatres and performance spaces are selling tickets and filling seats once again. A bitter-sweet moment occurred when Claire Hopkinson, Director & CEO, Toronto Arts Council & Toronto Arts Foundation announced that after 30 years, she was stepping down. Her good news was again that we seem to be entering a time of resurgence when we are finally able to welcome back audiences and patrons to enjoy talented musicians and artists once more. Our thanks to Haroon Khalid for the invitation to attend and cover this event.

Presenting Sponsors led by Shoppers Drug Mark understand that self confidence in appearance goes a long way towards better mental health in promoting a positive attitude essential for cancer recovery. Yes, serious work but this night was high energy starting with “Handsome” Harry Santa-Olalla really working the live auction. What a character he was. Liss Gallery in has been a mainstay Gallery in Yorkville for decades with a large number of artists-in-residence. Brian Liss loves music, so quite naturally, this opening night featured a performance during the reception.
