The Look Good Feel Better (LGFB), Mirror Ball 2025

November 7th, The Look Good Feel Better (LGFB), Mirror Ball, took place at a new location, the Automotive Building, Exhibition Place.

The mission continues to help Canadian’s living with cancer feel better about themselves again. Appearance matters in maintaining a positive attitude, essential to recovery.

Shopper’s Drug Mart once again was the lead sponsor for this long-running fundraiser where proceeds go towards workshops, support groups and online therapies.

These low intensity programs help reduce patient anxity and stress.

The silent auction contained many beauty and cosmetic items to bid on along with some very special wines as well. Always a popular opportunity at the Mirror Ball.

Thanks to Citizen Relations for the invitation to cover this reception.

ComKids Masquerade Ball 2025

October 16th was a very special night at Casa Loma for the ComKids Masquerade Ball.

This year the theme was “Eliminating the Digital Divide” as in past years recognizing that young people with limited access to technology cannot keep up with their peers in education where literary resources are essential for students to reach their academic potential. By providing at-risk youths a new laptop is only the first, but extremely important step in the ComKids support program started back in 1998.

The turn-out was great for this important fundraiser that featured a casino of sorts and lots of high energy entertainment with guests dressed to impress while in this beautiful castle. With Halloween only weeks away, this was a perfect opportunity to wear a mask and look glamourous as well.

And finally, Edllusion was back again charming well dressed guests with his humor and slight of hand… well; illusions.

The Peruvian Fashion Showcase

The Embassy of Peru held a Peruvian fashion showcase October 9th at the Arta Gallery in the historic Distillery to remind invited guests of the remarkable quality clothing and fashion accessories that are derived from Alpaca fleece.

These animals are sheared using sustainable practices resulting in high quality, strong, durable fibers often rendering items in the natural shades of beige, browns or off whites.

Art With Heart 2025

Art With Heart returned October 7th to The Carlu with a live and silent auction to support the work of Casey House in treating people with dignity and compassionate, stigma free, HIV health care.

TD Bank Group continues to fund Casey House through the TD Ready Commitment, the bank’s pledge to investing in local, underserved communities. They have been a proud sponsor for a great many years.

It was a strong turn out for his annual fundraiser with many returning Canadian artists offering their works during the reception viewing or later on stage in the popular live auction. A real opportunity for collectors and artists alike.

I believe the the banners declaring “Art With Healing” really said it all for this evening.

Legends of Horror 2025

It’s back and scarier than ever. Running through November 1st, Legends of Horror has returned to Casa Loma for the 10th consecutive year.

Many other Halloween themed experiences have become annual family events since, but I still believe this is the best and most immersion of all of them.

October 3rd, media and influencers were invited for a preview. I noticed some themed rooms as they seem to be were reimagined. The evening was mild and it was very dark at times. Just perfect for the thrills ahead on this sprawling property.

Wear comfortable clothing to maneuver the hidden trails and sunken tunnel for this over 2 hour experience where live actors along with some awesome animatronics add to the mystery and intrique.

You might just need a strong drink at the journeys end to calm your nerves. Well, The Captain Morgan Lounge features live, yes live, DJs every night with special cocktails like The Dracula Spritz or The Devil Wears Java before you hit the dance floor because there will be lots of energy in the space and you just might join in.

Night of Discovery

Since September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month it was fitting that the Meagan Bebenek Foundation held their 25th anniversary on September 25th at the legendary El Mocambo.

“Night of Discovery” was an exciting evening of purpose, passion and progress for this milestone year.
You see MBF is a national charitable organization driving research, while raising awareness and supporting families affected by paediatric brain tumors not only here, but around the world.

The announcement this evening of the 25 in 25 Campaign by MBF founder and president Denise Bebenek, in the memory of her daughter Meagan, stood for the commitment to fund 25 new research projects over the next year as a tribute to her legacy.

By the way, another bit of really good news was the announcement that the El Mocambo staff would still have theirs jobs now that the historic music venue has been purchased by a new owner keen on preserving that legacy.

The celebration really took off later when Sean Jones along with his band and vocalist Cleopatra Williams rocked out the second floor stage in true style performing an awesome mix of today’s favourites. What a night it was with a bold vision for the future of cancer research.

SCRUBS IN THE CITY PARIS

The Evergreen Brickworks once again was the place to be on June 5th for SCRUBS IN THE CITY PARIS when Holt Renfrew and the Mantella Corporation transformed this historic venue into the City of Lights.

Dixonlicious 2025

All would agree that 96 years is a very long time.
Dixon Hall began as a soup kitchen in 1929.
Over these past decades, it continues to offer a diverse range of integrated services for the residents of Downtown East Toronto.

Dixonlicious returned to the Daniels Spectrum May 29th to raise funds that will provide in the range of some 30,000 meals for those marginalized people who often go without due to isolation, poverty or social injustice.

It was encouraging to see a very large turnout to support those in need thanks to the local food and beverage businesses who donated to this signature fundraiser for Dixon Hall.

Over 400 guests experienced an evening of healthy food and fine entertainment while helping a great cause. Oh and comedian / television personality Sean Cullen was up for the job of emcee introducing performers and Dixon Hall staff with wit and flair.

Symphony In The Gardens 2025

The highly anticipated Symphony In The Gardens has returned to Casa Loma. It began with the the Rock Symphony on the newly named Chapman’s Stage.

What a perfect partnership having the Liberty Grand Entertainment Group known for presenting so many seasonal family events bringing all ages to the only castle in Canada, now having Chapman’s, another family owned business with over 180 products as the summer of 2025 presenting sponsor.

Under the baton of Maestro Paolo Basato, the Casa Loma Symphony Orchestra presented the ever popular ROCK Symphony. Headliners Justin Di Donato and Cleopatra Williams were totally awesome taking to the Chapman’s Stage in the Glass Pavilion. The title is spot on. Some of the best ever rock tunes sung with passion backed up by a legiondary orchestra.

The series has been rehearsed since February and will offer alternate evenings under the stars featuring emerging artists from Canada’s Walk Of Fame to showcase some very talented performers.

Oh by the way, on preview day over 3,000 people attended the Chapman’s Ice Cream Festival, a family -fun day when guests could enjoy photo ops and of course wait for it; enjoy as many ice cream treats from Chapman’s Super Premium Plus Collection as they would like to sample.

RC Restaurants Canada Show

The 80th anniversary, yes that is right; 80th anniversary of the RC Show presented by Restaurants Canada returned to the Enercare Centre, running 3 days, April 6th till April 9th and the attendance was the best yet as this industry came together under one roof to celebrate, connect and FUEL their business into the future.

This year in particular, showcasing our Canadian food service industry means more than ever. Each day had a different theme stressing local sourcing, sustainability, culinary innovation and also what is new for bars and beverages they serve.

It was almost too much to see in just one day with hourly presentations and a speaking series that changed each day as well.

Day one concluded with the Fuel after party in Heritage Court.
Here, while a live band took to the stage, you could visit the many food trucks for the Foodtruckin’ Experience, and it was an experience despite the long lineups for very creative offerings.

Mark your calendars now for a different date and location next year when the RC Show will move west to the International Centre March 8th to the 10th, for the 2026 edition.

The Yonge-Dundas Square renaming project

The Yonge-Dundas Square renaming project involved over 3,000 consultants and councillors, but was not without controversy.

Guests and those involved in the renaming were invited to the Aperture Room on the 3rd floor of the 100 plus year old Thorton-Smith Building at 340 Yonge Street.

A series of councillors spoke of the process and results by choosing the name Sankofa, originating in Ghana, the name refers to the act of reflecting on and reclaiming teachings from the past, then enabling people to move forward together. The mission is to build a more inclusive Toronto for all, to bring more people back downtown for various cultural activities in the Square. Something that has been lacking since COVID.

I was privileged to attend the media preview of ROCK Symphony to experience one of the finest high-energy stage shows you could imagine with headliners Justin Di Donato of The Cold Weather Captains along with Cleopatra Williams. Together their showmanship and vocal ranges are astounding.

What could be more thrilling than the 800ft walk within the underground tunnel under Austin Terrace leading to the historic Carriage Room in The Stables. Homes for Dinner: The Ruby Gala, was a very special affair by celebrating 40 years of Homes First November 16th at the Globe and Mail Centre.

The mission to to create safe, affordable housing in Toronto has not been easy, but is essential to save lives of those facing the challenges of substance abuse, mental health issues, lack of room in shelters and living on the streets without a home.

The discussion this evening centred around the need to use every dollar possible to open up affordable rental housing because overcrowded shelters are not the answer in ending chronic homelessness in our city. Homeless to Homefull is the goal.

Programs at Margaret’s are known for changing lives one at a time by empowering women with mental health issues to rebuild their lives by providing hope and healing guided by Executive Director Diane Walter who was recognized for her leadership these past 30 years.

Another highpoint was meeting Kimberly Curry who was the 2024 Margaret Trudeau Advocacy Award Recipient.

Back to the variety show; a stellar cast of emerging and established entertainers took to the stage with stand up comedy and musical performances hosted by Maggie Cassella.

You could say this was quite the celebration supporting the housing and community services provided by margarets.ca

18th anniversary of Jamrock

This year marked the 18th anniversary of Jamrock, the signature fundraising event for the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation (HHJF) held once again at the lakeside Palais Royale Ballroom.

The theme this year was “The Spirit of Jamaica” embodying the island’s motto, “Out of Many, One People.

Funds generated go towards the necessary mission of building new schools for hundreds of children by alleviating the challenges of inadequate classroom spaces, overcrowding and improper sanitation.

What was also great about this evening was that a wear-white theme looked very elegant supporting the island theme, especially under the lights of dance party that followed.

The Masquerade Ball

It was the 3rd annual Masquerade Ball held October 17th at Casa Loma in support of ComKids whereToronto’s elite and philanthropists gathered to make a difference in the lives of young students who through poverty or economic barriers cannot purchase the modern day tools needed in the classroom.

Founded in1998, ComKids partners with school boards and community organizations to provide deserving students a laptop computer. This overcomes a digital divide to now allow those students help in completing research and school assignments.

Entertainment at the ComKids Masquerade Ball was amazing in presenting a glamourous Las Vegas casino theme with dancers, musical performers and the return of Edwin presenting his magic slight-of-hand with high style.

Art With Heart

The historic Carlu has hosted Art For Heart over many of the 31 years this signature fundraising art auction has taken place. Likewise, TD Group continues to be the presenting sponsor.

Casey House Founder, June Callwood understood the need for compassionate health care for those dealing with HIV/AIDS.

Many emerging artists and galleries have partnered with Casey House over the decades because the need to support programming and their services is still very evident.

AFTER BREAST CANCER 12th Annual Pink Diamond Gala

It was the 12th Anniversary for the after BREAST CANCER Pink Diamond Fundraising Gala held once again at Bellvue Manor on September 29th.

Of course, it is devastating for anyone to be diagnosed with cancer. Founder & Executive Director Alicia Vianga along with her team have been doing all possible by supporting necessary research and development efforts to improve a women’s quality of life after treatment (ABC) with this annual fundraising gala.

All proceeds from the gala will go directly to the ABC Care Kit and Thrive Program for women who are financially burdened following a mastectomy surgery and also those going into surgery.

Since men are also at risk, this year the Keynote Speaker was American music executive Mathew Knowles, a breast cancer survivor himself known as manager of Destiny’s Child among other acts and lately as educator and spokesperson on cancer recovery.

Speaking of music, great entertainment was presented by Duality at the opening reception, followed later by The Sound Parade, Vanessa Wang, Caren D’Cruz, Chris Munro and O’Deriic taking to the stage in celebration of life after breast cancer.

The Blood and Cuts Exhibit at Liss Gallery

A special preview of original and limited edition prints by Billy Morrison and sculptures by Johnathan Ball was held August 8th at Liss Gallery.

Billy Morrison is an established British singer and guitar player now part of the Billy Idol Band.

A master of the six string guitar and also expressing himself by creating large canvases it turns out. The works are vibrant with introspective imagery.

After performing several numbers with band mates he introduced his boss. Yes, that boss. Billy Idol stepped out and did a rousing version of Rebel Yell. What an experience to witness.

Following the Toronto August 9th gig that next day, the Canadian leg continued as part of a world tour supporting a new Rebel Yell album where he co-wrote a couple of tracks.

Thanks to Brian Liss and Brittany Emmons for the invite. It was awesome.

44th annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards

The 44th annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards were held at the historic Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre presented by The Romano De’Andre Foundation.

A fabulous venue to celebrate the living arts in Toronto. Times were never easy for theatre groups even way before the pandemic and evening host Ryan G Hinds wanted us to know “We’re Still Here” is the theme, especially for smaller stages with cutbacks in government funding and so many other complications.

These awards recognized 43 award categories across 7 divisions, saluting excellence in professional theatre, dance and opera.

Symphony In The Gardens

“Let’s Go To The Movies” was the theme for the opening night June 3rd of the upcoming 13 weeks of Symphony In The Gardens at Casa Loma with a series of Sunset Concerts.

Get ready for some amazing programming presented by Maestro Paolo Busato and the Casa Loma Symphony Orchestra along with many guest performers this summer. There will be something for everyone, trust me. Oh, and the gardens are spectacular at Canada’s only castle on the hill.

For example opening night, many film score selections were new additions. From Schindler’s List to Out of Africa and King’s Speech; these were amazing to experience while those film moments played in the background of the beautiful Glass Pavillion.

Hendrick’s Gin created some beautiful photo ops throughout the gardens while offering samples poured by brand ambassadors and ladies in festive costumes. What fun !

2nd Annual One Golden Night

One Golden Night returned for a second year outdoors on the actual late 19th, early 20th century film set of Murdock Mysteries in Toronto’s east end.

Honorary Co Chairs Shantelle and Yannick Bisson welcomed and thanked guests for attending to support Childhood Cancer Canada by raising funds for children fighting cancer. In fact, $ 1.8 million has been raised since 2008.

We heard several personal stories related to the work of this charity and why the need is still great. Serious work learning that 10,000 plus children in Canada now are bravely wanting to live their dreams beyond cancer.

Curtis Connor and Jacob Sharpe can attest to that, as they did a fine job as comedic emcees with a story of their own.

It was singer/songwriter Aion Clarke who was just right for the evening entertainment. So cool on stage and off. What a Golden Night !

2024 Wet Gala

The 2024 Wet Gala was held May 2nd at 5 Brock by Water Ambassadors Canada. We were reminded that we take clean available water for granted. It is shocking to know that the lack of clean water is the number one cause of death and disease in the world. Climate change has added to this crisis.

Funds raised these past 21years go towards drilling wells and creating water projects in 25 countries changing lives by providing clean water.

Serious discussions for sure. Since the well know Met Gala is all about fashion, this Wet Gala did include an upbeat fashion show as well along with an after party featuring DJ Natalie so the title really worked.

Exhibit A – Investigating Crime and Footwear

Exhibit A : Investigating Crime and Footwear opened April 17th at the Bata Shoe Museum. The exhibition traced the development of footwear forensics as a means of solving crimes from the early 19th century till today.

Footprints would reveal what type of shoe a criminal wore and even from what district. One smart criminal wrapped his shoes with flannel to hide his identity knowing more than most at the time.

Fun fact for the opening was enjoying Club Django perform retro jazz and seeing many guests dressing for the era.

This was an exciting evening in support of Pink Pearl Canada, a registered charitable organization to empower self-identifying young women who are working through the social and emotional challenges of cancer. We heard some personal stories during the reception of how the charity made a difference
to their lives through difficult times.

Tania Tonello was the perfect host introducing board members and later the Dueling Pianos to keep things upbeat with live requests of popular tunes.

Returning to Toronto for this signature fundraiser was one thing ; but a donation of $35,000 really became the highlight of the night. Congratulations to all involved. Also thanks to Laura Blinkhorn, Public Relations Coordinator for the invitation to attend.

Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO)

The POGO PJ Party “Leap into the Wild” took place at the stunning heritage event venue The Symes. Guests dressed down you could say into comfortable and creative nightwear for this signature fundraiser for the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO). This marks some 40 years of providing financial assistance to families so they can pay out-of-pocket costs associated with their child’s treatment, of which there are many.

Back to the pajama story. Many years ago, POGO Chief Development Officer, Lynn Wilson had the brilliant idea of attacting younger people by changing things up from the usual formal sit down dinner. Hospital staff understand that children responded better not seeing hospital gowns, but more familiar pj’s. What a surprise, everyone liked the idea and changing yearly themes .

This annual POGO PJ Party has raised $1.8 Million since its inception in 2017. Since the event was held on a leap year, the title made sense, Leap into the Wild and the night successfully generated over $366,000 towards supporting kids with cancer across Ontario .
A true leap of faith !

Blue Bovine Steak + Sushi House

Liberty Entertainment Group has brought life back to many historic buildings with some of the most recognized restaurants in the world, most notably BlueBlood Steakhouse in Casa Loma and of course the Michelin-starred Don Alfonso 1890 voted the second best Italian restaurant in the world. Years in the planning, Blue Bovine Steak + Sushi House proudly opened February 20th in the upper east wing of Union Station. From the metallic art deco inspired ceiling to the wood finishes and velvet seating, again Nadia Di Donato has created a plush decor that compliments this heritage building and location close to the financial district. A VIP evening was held earlier to introduce guests and media to the partners involved including Kevin O ‘ Leary, Lawrence Zucker and Mitchell Marner. The 37th Teddy Bear Affair

The 37th Teddy Bear Affair returned November 5th to the MTCC. This Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada Gala is one of the longest running and most attended fundraisers with a commitment to children, youth, and families. This year the gala chose to focus on the well-being of Indigenous communities with a goal to enhancing the lives of Indigenous children and the insurmountable challenges they face with a new program titled “The Stand Up For Kids Legacy Society”. Outside of the fabulous entertainment, a highlight of the gala was a timed 5 minute silent auction where an amazing $100,000 was raised in record time as a challenge to all guests using their phones at once. Combined with sales of those iconic Teddy Bears, this was quite the affair.

Trillium Diwali Gala

The Trillium Diwali Gala took place November 3rd at the Pearson Convention Centre. Diwali is an ancient fall festival that signifies the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, knowledge over ignorance and hope over dispair. It was a large turnout to support the necessary redevelopment and expansion of the largest hospital in Canada and the future home of The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital. Guests were treated to some wonderful entertainment throughout the night including the Bollywood School of Dance Canada, DJ Baba Khan and finally the headline act, Raghav. This was truly a celebration for a great cause.

Dressed To Impress

The Bata Shoe Museum was transformed into a bustling 1980’s mall for the grand opening Halloween night of ‘Dressed To Impress’ – Footwear and Consumerism in the 80’s. This historical retrospective is a brilliant time warp featuring 80 pairs of shoes divided into 6 nostalgic sections. Live performances throughout the night featured fashions and music from this decade of excess when no one was shopping online. The mall was the place to be for all ages. Thanks to Deanne Moser and Paula McLean of DM Public for the invitation that night.

The Masquerade Ball

The Masquerade Ball was presented in a Great Gatsby theme October 26th at Casa Loma supporting the mission of CoMkids since 1998 by connecting educators with students and then improve digital literacy by providing laptop computers and other life tools. Who would not want to dress up for such a great cause at the castle with a vintage Rolls at the front door for selfies. This was not the usual sit-down dinner with the predictable live auction and so on. From the moment guests entered the castle, they were greated by strolling musicians and wait staff with trays of appetizers . Food stations were featured throughout and the dancing went on to late in the night. Although not a Halloween event, some great moments took place when several frightening characters crashed the gala from the Legends of Horror experience that ran outdoors the month of October. Our thanks to Jennifer Bassett and Bassett Events for the invite.

Participate, Educate and Elevate is the mission of this charity improving the lives of the next generation of Jamaicans and their communities by creating a world-class education system of 26 new schools and more in the planning. Evening emcee Jay Martin was the best choice to keep proceedings moving along with lots of humour as he is known for. Congratulations to all the volunteers and Lorraine Quartaro for the invitation to JamRock at the Palais.

Rising Angels Gala

The first Rising Angels Gala was held this October to help rebuild the lives of all women who have suffered sexual exploitation by offering programs and mentorship support helping them heal by getting out of poverty and a dangerous lifestyle. Executive Director and founder of Rising Angels, Katarina MacLeod lived that life and now wants to help make a change for others. We heard this evening that the numbers are really beyond belief. Serious work but this was only the beginning.

To keep things upbeat, guests were treated to an art competition of all things . And later, The Patti Jannetta Band was joined by the legendary Jackie Richardson and high energy performer G Pinto to end the evening on a high note for sure. More information at; www.risingangels.net

Legends of Horror

Legends of Horror returned as the sun set and moon came out September 28th for a special preview evening of one of Toronto’s favourite Halloween experiences. A highlight this evening was a rocking performance by Cold Weather Captains to make this a real happening. You see there is always music at Casa Loma. Imagine, just within one month of the successful summer series of Soul in the City and Symphonies in the Garden, the castle has undergone a total transformation that is even bigger and bolder than last year thanks to the vision of Nick and Nadia Di Donato.

Liberty Entertainment Group was won awards lately for bringing families of all ages to the castle on the hill because of such creative programming. If you prepare for the unexpected with a combination of gruesome characters and huge animatronics jumping out of the darkness as you walk over a 2 kilometre trail taking you through the lower gardens and dimly lit tunnels of the castle.

Many new surprises are part of what is termed “presentational form as promenade theatre” with some outstanding 3D castle projections. You may even get to meet Dr. Frankenstein in his rat-infested labratory. Legends of Horror runs till October 31st and I recommend you book tickets early at www.legendsofhorror.ca My thanks to Liberty Entertainment Group and Susan Willemsen of the Siren Group for my invitation to experience something so special.

Art With Heart

October 5th, Art With Heart returned to the Carlu for the first time in 6 years. This year marked 3 milestones. Casey House began 35 years ago by celebrated journalist June Callwood. She recognized the urgent need for HIV care to not only patients, but also their families.

Back then Casey House was a hospice, today it has become a full hospital with many much needed support programs. Art With Heart turned 30 as emerging and established artists and galleries come together again for a silent and live annual signature fundraising auction . On that theme, few know Canadian artists as well as Stephen Ranger, who he would say has had the honour to connect artists with patrons for 29 amazing years.

Yes this was a night of celebration and what better venue than the stunning art deco 7th floor of The Carlu. In the 1930’s the Round Room was where many high-end weddings held receptions. This night, it was a stage for the after party with live art inspired performances and DJ dancing. So much fun for a great cause. Thanks should go to the many volunteers and a personal thanks to Lisa McDonald for our invitation to attend.

Pink Diamond Gala

The pink carpet was rolled out September 24th for the 11th anniversary of the after BREAST CANCER Pink Diamond Gala this year held at the new location of Bellvue Manor in Vaughan. Unlike other galas, this fundraising celebration is always held on a Sunday afternoon to celebrate the breast cancer survivors and S/HE Ambassadors. Founder & Executive Director Alicia Vianga was joined by other Board of Directors to introduce the Aftercare For Survivors Program, recent cancer graduates and loyal leading sponsors.

This year was very special having CTV National Anchor Sandie Rinaldo as the keynote speaker bravely sharing her personal story of why after BREAST CANCER matters to her family. Serious topics for sure although there was plenty of high energy entertainment during the gala to add to the celebration including Duality, Roberta Battaglia, Nickola Magnolia and last on stage, Karl Wolf. All proceeds will go the ABC Care Kit! and Thrive Programs for women who are financially burdened following a mastectomy surgery and others who will be going into surgery. Our thanks to Nadia Cerelli-Fiore of Plan B Media for our invitation to attend.

Starlight Children’s Foundation Gala

“The Power of Play” was the title of the 25th Anniversary Starlight Children’s Foundation Gala held at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel August 31st . Guests were greeted by super heroes and toy characters on stilts- all acting up course so fun for Starlight children attending as well as unlimited photo opps for all. After a three year absence, the gala was well attended with several highlights. Starlight children entered the ballroom on a moving life-sized toy train and then were introduced by returning emcee, television personality Rick Campanelli. For the adults later on stage there was a wonderful performance by the Mississauga Children’s Choir, followed by recording artist and actor, Tyler Shaw.

This milestone event was made possible by loyal presenting sponsor Toys “R” Us Canada and Babies “R” Us Canada, as showing twenty five years of corporate support. Importantly, The Wish auction generated funds to grant seriously ill children an experience to provide some joy when they need it most. The large number and variety of programs assist families with sick or hospitalized children up against so many doctor’s appointments and challenges. It takes many volunteers and patrons purchasing tickets to make this night the success that it was. Thanks as well to Cory Stewart at Embrace Disruption PR . Masquerade Night

The 2023 Symphony In the City presented by the Toronto Concert Orchestra concluded August 22nd with “Masquerade Night” and guests truly dressed-to-impress on this final of 9 themed evenings held this summer at the Palais Royale Ballroom. Co-Artistic Artistic Directors Sharon Lee and Marcus Scholtes created a program of favourite classical numbers by Leroy Anderson, Emile Waldteufel, Felix Mendelssohn, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Karl Jenkins and many others for this spirited evening. We were reminded that the TCO family will be ever grateful to the vision of their founder, the late Maestro Kerry Stratton along with so many volunteers and the Board of Directors.

Although the season was well attended, times have never been more challenging. Getting back to live performances after COVID was one thing, however this year the unexpected happened when crucial government funding was not just cut back, it was discontinued all together for many arts organizations. The Toronto Concert Orchestra is a registered charity and can use your support by purchasing tickets for next season or making a donation now at www.tcomusic.ca Our thanks again to Sharon Lee and Marcus Scholtes for the invitation to attend and help raise awareness.

Let’s Dance ! The Musical

Terra Bruce Productions brought “Let’s Dance ! The Musical” to the gorgeous Elgin Winter Garden Theatre for a limited run August 11th to the 20th. Show producer, Walter Schroeder was inspired by the early 60’s as the golden age of teen dances when all the hits on the radio featured up-beat songs- many about the dance crazes of the time, most notably, the Twist. Yes, a time of innocence before the British Invasion or later psychedelic era

These are the hits performed by a young and already very accomplished cast who not only sing so well, but also display incredible choreography. We have basically seen this sort of a story line before. It is 1963  when a high school is putting on a show and the teachers and students do not agree on many aspects.

Cast leads, Lucianno  DeCicco plays Marco, while Mikayla Stradiotto is Sophia. Both have vocal ranges that are unreal and can they cut a rug centre stage. Out of our sight, Paul Moody conducts a live band behind the curtain so the show provides a live high-energy soundscape for the singing and dancing towards some 2 hours. Our thanks to Paula McLean at DM Public for the invitation to opening night and the cast after-party.

TCO Music – Symphony In The City

This summer The Toronto Concert Orchestra returned to present a series of totally differently themed Tuesday evenings July through August at the iconic Palais Royale Ballroom. These immersive concerts were titled “TCO Music – Symphony In The City” and the venue was perfect being where big bands played throughout the 1930’s and 40’s. Guests were treated to a reception on the beautiful lake-side patio prior to gathering in the ballroom later.

Acclaimed vocalist Pandora Topp has been presenting the repertoire of Edith Piaf now for at least a decade or more. On this evening titled “Pandora’s Piaf”, each song began with a progressive interpretation of how Piaf struggled in her personal and professional life. This helped us appreciate what was to come with Co-Artistic Director of the Toronto Concert Orchestra, Sharon Lee conducting, joined by Marcus Scholtes as the series emcees. There really is nothing to compare with live music performed on the stage of the legendary Palais Royale Ballroom. This series struck all the right notes. More information at;www.tcomusic.ca Our thanks to Sharon Lee for the invitation to attend.

An appreciation party was held July 16th for all the fighters, sponsors and volunteers who together made this year’s FTEC2023 Fight To End Cancer a total success. Hard work and long hours were rewarded with a family-style BBQ at the Kingsway Boxing Club. Families were also treated to games and several high-energy performances throughout the night by the Soda Blue Band to make this a special occasion for sure.

Tiger of Sweden Toronto

It was the 10 year anniversary this summer for Tiger of Sweden Toronto on Ossington Ave and they know how to party. Local businesses in this bustlng area provided tasty beverages and party foods. A photo booth was popular, but performances later by Justin Nozuka were totally remarkable – so special with a dedicated stage created inside the store with Tiger of Sweden Toronto clothing as the background. Very stylish indeed !

Rock The Barn

Founded by teen brothers Callum and Thomas Buckley, “Rock The Barn” at Fresh City Farms Downsview Park June 22nd was a country hoe-down with a purpose. After losing a classmate who took his own life, the brothers were inspired to do something to support other young people facing mental health challenges. They enlisted the help of Dr. Tripathy from CAMH Foundation to present the first-ever RTBT concert featuring 3 Canadian musical acts, craft beer and delicious food donated by Ghost Tacos.

This fundraising event was a massive project involving local businesses, numerous volunteers and of course Callum Buckley who not only was the emcee, he is a song writer and solid performer who knows how to put on a show, on stage or off. If you missed this inaugural event, make sure to check out www.rockthebarntoronto.com for updates on the concert next year. Thanks to Callum and Timothy Buckley for our invitation.

Soul In The City

June 20th marked the opening night of a tremendously popular series returning to Casa Loma hosted by the charismatic singer Sean Jones. “Soul In The City”, aka Casa- Soul, joins “Symphony In The Gardens” for Summer Experiences After Dark at Casa Loma. Liberty Entertainment Group CEO, Nick DiDonato has been bringing families of all ages to our castle for many exciting experiences. With over 30 years of hospitality experience, this man knows that Toronto has fewer and fewer live music opportunities. Monday evenings it is big band music, each Tuesday rocking R&B hits.

What could top having a drink or sit down dinner in the gardens of a mansion while enjoying your favourite type of music. Sean Jones backed by the seven piece Righteous Echo Band had guests on their feet and dancing. Each week guest performers join the band so you could return and see a different show throught-out the summer months till August 29th. Evenings are full so book ahead at www.casaloma.ca Thanks again to Susan Willemsen of the Siren Group for the invitation.
