The Yonge-Dundas Square renaming project involved over 3,000 consultants and councillors, but was not without controversy.
Guests and those involved in the renaming were invited to the Aperture Room on the 3rd floor of the 100 plus year old Thorton-Smith Building at 340 Yonge Street.

A series of councillors spoke of the process and results by choosing the name Sankofa, originating in Ghana, the name refers to the act of reflecting on and reclaiming teachings from the past, then enabling people to move forward together. The mission is to build a more inclusive Toronto for all, to bring more people back downtown for various cultural activities in the Square. Something that has been lacking since COVID.
The future of the Square was toasted at a reception held January 29th, a day marking the Lunar New Year.
How appropriate that food stations featured dumplings, shrimp and spring rolls on that theme along with dj beats to keep the celebration lively.
Thanks to DM Public for the invitation.
