The POGO Pajama Party at the Symes

A 40 year anniversary was marked February 9th at the Symes with the POGO Pajama Party. Years ago this annual fundraiser was more of the expected black-tie event with a sit-down dinner as so many other galas once were. As returning emcee, television journalist Glen Baxter now reminds us there is a strict dress code; relax and celebrate POGO in creative night wear – yes colourful pj’s.

That theme for the past many years has attracted a younger demographic of philanthropic supporters which is essential these days. The venues are also the latest treated as a destination. The Symes, built 1939 was once a garbage incinerator waste transfer station. Today this repurposed gorgeous art deco space is home to high-end wedding celebrations, perfect for a party like this. POGO is the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, offering care, treatment and support to the children and family’s dealing with cancer. Understanding the needs and stress a family goes through when a child develops cancer, 25 years ago POGO began building satellite clinics to elleviate long distance travel and related costs.

Yes this was a double anniversary so how did the party go ? Well with a welcoming stilt-walker, dress up photo booth and the rocking band, it was fabulous ! Although some areas were reserved by supporting sponsors, a few were donated to POGO Ambassadors and their families. Rebecca McKenzie is the 2023 Chair for the POGO PJ Party. She bravely shared a personal story about her son Jacob. That story continued shortly after as Jacob took to the stage explaining his journey and showing his talent as a performer opening for SOLE POWER LIVE. It really does not get much better than this; care with humanity.
