The cowboy boot has been around forever it seems , but do we really know the history of how they evolved ?
Well, the BSM Director & Senior Curator, Elizabeth Semmelhack went way back as author of her new book Rough and Ready: A History of the Cowboy Boot to trace it in detail.
Opening night guests were invited to wander through the beautifully presented exhibition. Not only were the boots fascination to view, but with so many vintage posters, this was an exciting experience.

In her opening remarks, Elizabeth mentioned a most interesting fact she discovered. What looks more masculine than a cowboy boot ? How about knowing that talented women were responsible for that detailed leather work and ornate beading embellishments when we think of rodeos, rebellions and rock shows recently with Beyonce as Cowboy Carter. The book takes us from early cattle trails to most recent fashion bootmaker craftsmanship by Ralph Lauren and others who promote the western look in chapters titled “Rhinestones” and “Reclaimed”.
A big attraction opening night was that The Sadies played a live set of original material. This local combo with sharp delivery and a twangy guitar were a perfect musical accompaniment. Think of those 1950’s early westerns with that lonesome, forlorn Duayn Eddy vibe. The crowd went wild for these Canadian icons of country rock. The Sadies blend gritty R&B twangy with a punk– surf edge that was just remarkable.
Thank you to Matthew Hanick and DMPublic for my invitation to saddle up for this fun event.
